About us

We provide social and academic support for the Rigler Elementary students, families and teachers. Funds are used for community building, cultural and educational events and programs, and to provide grants for classroom projects and supplies. We dream big and small for a better future for our community.

Padres Unidos de Rigler/PTA is a volunteer-run group dedicated to providing social and academic support for students, families and teachers. Rigler Elementary is a Spanish Dual-Language Immersion and Title I neighborhood school, serving a large population of Latinx, Indigenous, and immigrant families. Our community is extraordinarily rich and diverse in languages, cultures, experiences, and dreams.

We strive to engage and support our community in all its diversity, recognizing the real barriers to inclusion and equity that many Rigler families face in their daily lives. Some of the practices and policies that we have developed include:

  1. All events and communications are always bilingual, with Spanish-first,

  2. Our meeting times rotate (daytime, evening, in-person, virtual) to recognize the distinct schedules and commitments of Rigler families,

  3. We use multiple technologies and platforms for all of our communications,

  4. We are committed to producing culturally-relevant and linguistically-appropriate media and events,

  5. We activate a consensus model of decision making at our meetings, allowing for all voices to be heard and counted, and

  6. We have no financial barriers to participation: we have no membership fees, and all of our events are free to attend with interpretation, food, and childcare provided.

Our commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion are deeply rooted in our commitments to social justice. This extends our work to our robust partnerships with the Rigler SUN program and our neighboring schools, working together to meet families’ basic needs around clothing, food, and other resources. Finally, we see advocacy at the district and state-level as an integral part of our commitments to equity and justice, and we are active in efforts to promote more just and equitable funding for public schools, and in particular for multilingual and historically marginalized communities.
